Abba yields to Madge
While driving along in the silence of my car yesterday I found myself tapping my steering wheel (my driver was off yesterday, herpes you know) and incohesively mumbling “gim… gi… man aft… midnight…”. “Man after midnight? Holy condom” I thought. What was I singing? Abba aint taken kindly to round these parts? Was I going mental? I did just see a poster of Tom Cruise a second ago, maybe that was it. And then it struck me, Madonna had just been on the blower with her “Hung up” single. “Phew” was worried for second. Can’t go mental again this week. Unusual to hear an Abba sample isn’t it? I thought so too, so I looked it up.
Interesting bit of music trivia. In allowing Madonna to sample their 1979 classic “Gimme Gimme Gimme” the group broke their no samples rule for only the second time. And apparently, they didn’t say yes right away, Madge had to beg. (Makes me wonder what Ace of Base had to do…?)
That’s correct Abba historically has said no to every other artists request of a sample save Madonna and the Fugees. And that’s why you don’t hear any Abba samples on the radio. And I thought it was just ’cause they suck.
