Interviews = curse word

Aside from childbirth, I think the most (emotionally) stressfull things in life are doing a drivers license test and interviews. The very word makes my stomach churn. Not only is it intimidating but all the excuses that you have to come up with to get time off from your current job to seek other employment is nerve-wrecking. Well for me anyhow. I always have this strange fear that people can tell when I’m lying. That’s probably because I’m no good at it! The same strange phobia I have when walking out of a shop. I’m always afraid that the security guard will think I’ve stolen something and take me down in a football tackle like one of those tackles out of Waterboy. Yup, I can safely admit that I’m a strange bird.

The other day my boss asked me how I managed to land my CV on his desk. I simply replied, “I sent it to “info@…..co.za”".

So here is my story:

In about June 2004 I was admitted to the emergency room because of severe pain in my upper abdomen. I was told that this was due to the high levels of stress at my current job and it had taken a toll on my health. That’s when I decided to seriously search for another job. I put my CV out there and about 2 weeks later I got a call from Ernst & Young. I went for an interview and it went really well. One of those interviews where you think: “Its in the bag!” I wasn’t actually to work for Ernst & Young, they were simply interviewing for another company. I waited a week and nothing, then, impatient as I am, I decided to call the lady and she said that I didn’t have enough experience in the field and wasn’t suitable for the job. After deciding to just give up on my search, the stress at work built up again. Eventually by October 2004 I had had enough and was determined to find another job if it was the last thing I did.

I sent my CV to every single company I could think of including “info@….co.za” and figured that if I put enough hooks out there I ought to catch at least ONE fish. I got a call in about mid November 2004. I went for an interview, then again for a second and got the job and started work in Jan 2005. Here’s the really weird twist….the interview at Ernst & Young was for the exact same position that I now fill!

So the moral of the story is not to give up as every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve
our condition.

That’s it from me…
