Karts and Pixies

My much anticipated weekend of fun was all that and much more. Friday’s go-karting escapades saw me get my hiney whipped on the track and left me with a number of bruises resulting from a few wide corners and some terrible driving. The evenings’ excitement came from a kart that burst into flames when an overfilled tank spilt over the sparkplugs. Fun fun. Fortunately no one was hurt but there’s nothing like some unexpected pyrotechnics to lighten up the evening.

Later we went to the Supersport cafe and listened to a terrible band.. well actually the band was good but they were made to look really crap by their singer who murdered one song after another. But we had a laugh and the evening ended off well.

Saturday was definately the highlight of the weekend with our monthly trip to Fireklub. South African guys will be familiar with the music festival ‘Oppiekoppie’. Well the guy that started Oppiekoppie, Dorien somebody, now lives in Lorraine, Port Elizabeth. He’s mostly retired and now organises an acoustic band evening of sorts on the front lawn of his house every first Saturday of the month. You pitch up with your blanket, food and wine and warmed by the flames of 3 huge bonfires, you can relax listening to guys and girls playing guitars and singing, some styling jemba drums and even some poetry recitals. Standouts of the evening was a little group called ‘Sage’. 3 ladies, one on main vocals and keyboard, one on guitar and one as backup harmonizing vocals sang the most moving and incredible songs. They sounded creepily similar to Beth Orton and they were simply brilliant. The Fire Pixies dazzled us with some skilled fire juggling and fire stick handling.. Quite impressive.

Sunday I cooked dinner for a couple of friends and then drank some Jack and chatted until late…

If you’re ever in PE, get in touch with me and make a plan to visit Fireklub. Its a shweet event and worth the R25 entry…

Pictures will be following shortly… :)
