Leopard is better than Vista - Walt Mossberg
Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal has put together a nice review video of Apple’s new operating system, “Leopard”.
Now I don’t necessarily agree with his closing comments about Leopard being better than Vista, but I do agree that Leopard has definately proven themselves when it comes to that ‘Wow’ effect. Vista has that 3D window scrolling thingie, and the glossy corners etc, but Leopard has a huuuge array of features that all have that Wow effect. From what I’ve seen, I do believe that Leopard eeks Vista out of the running in this regard.

Walt also makes a good point that while Leopard is boasting its 300 new features, most of these features won’t be fully explored by the average user. But there are key features that certainly impress. The ‘time machine’ feature that allows a visual backtracking through deleted file restoration is very impressive.
All this being said though, the question still remains - is all that visual stuff necessary. Sure it makes for a fun experience - a sliding, transforming, 3D window is certainly better to watch than a flat white text box - but do those aesthetic features alone warrant it as a better operating system? I’m not so sure… I guess until I get my hands on a copy I wont really know for sure…
Enjoy Walt Mossberg’s video review.

Honestly, I think Tiger is better than Vista! Surely the absolute benchmark of a great operating system, is responsiveness. (Within reason of course - obviously DOS would “out respond” any modern OS!) Vista just isn’t very responsive - current hardware just can’t cope with the intense resource demand. Whereas, Tiger is on par with XP in terms of responsiveness. So long as the Leopard experience is still relatively responsive, I believe the OS shootout is a white-wash in Apple’s favour.
Valid point jv. Nobody likes a sluggish OS thats gonna take a few seconds to open a window. I think most would rather have less visual appeal in favor of less lag.
Man I wrote a whole comment and i got an error when i submitted it.
I’ve just converted and bought a new MacBook pro. I get it on Saturday, can’t wait. I’ve been thinking of getting one ever since I was at the future of web design conference in London. When the speaker asked who uses Mac and who uses Windows I was one of the plus minus 10 out of about 2000 who said i use Windows.
Then I saw the new Leopard features video on the Apple site and that closed the deal for me.
If I can get an operating system that runs my design apps at a better speed, and more stably than Windows can, packaged with a beautiful interface and some great other features, it’s a no brainer!
What do you use Mark?
I’ll admit I use Windows now, but a while back I had an Apple and I used it for a while and honestly, I found the interface a little clumsy. That being said, I’ll be the first to admit that this is probably because I’m so used to using PC and I was using PC and Mac at the same time… As to which is better - well i think thats a chicken vs egg story - there’s no real way to know.
Each to their own…
