Mars as big as the moon

Okay so there’s this crazy rumour going around that Mars is going to be the size of the moon this month. That’s right, the moon, or, roughly the size of Oprah’s ass.

Let’s just think about that. Now i’m no expert on planetary alignment but if Mars is going to be that big, shouldn’t we be seeing it gradually increasing in size? How fast must this planet move to suddenly be that size in the sky? Unless of course it’s planning a surprise maybe. Maybe it’ll just hide behind Jupiter, and then BANG. Surprise!!! Geez, if that is the case I hope it doesn’t miss and take out half of Earth by mistake.

Mars: Surprise!!!
Earth people: Arrrrghhhhh, I’m melting
Mars: Woops
George W: It seems as a people we have misunderestimated the ability of Al-Qaeda. This is clearly the work of Extremist Muslims in an effort to hurt the people of America. We’re currently looking for member of Al-Qaeda that might have stolen NASA shuttles to re-direct Mars’ course. The war on terror continues. Good for us Al-Qaeda seems to have missed the U.S and actually taken out the middle east.
Tom Tancredo: Let’s bomb Mecca, oh, there’s no more Mecca? Let’s make some Samoosas then.
CNN: Breaking news today, large volumes of oil have been discovered on Mars…

Generally, I’d consider myself a believer. I don’t think I believe this time…

Peace outty

Woah Mr. Ignorant!! There’s no way in Al-Qaeda hell that Mars will ever be that close to the earth to be equall in size to the moon! It’s true that Mars is very close to the earth (closest in 60 000 years)and will be closest on the 28th August at around midnight. It’s luminosity will be 3rd brightest in the sky behind Venus and the moon, but it’ll certainly not be close in size to the moon. Mars will appear more than six times larger and shine some 85 times brighter than it normally does.

Shine on…

The winner is… Dale! Phil there has got an interesting mix of fact and fiction going. Mars was at it’s closest in 60,000 years back in August of 2003. Mars will be at its closest to Earth for the 2005 opposition on Oct. 30, but not as close as it was in 2003. Check out my web site for more.
