Microsoft lays down the Longhorn

Windows Vista Logo
Thursday July 21st, 2005. The Redmond offices have finally dropped the horrific code-name Longhorn with the announcement that that the next iteration of the Windows OS will indeed be called … Windows Vista. According to all of the industry insiders, Beta 1 of Windows Vista will be available as soon as August 2005, whilst release versions will only be printed in the second half of 2006. To quote activewin:

Microsoft Windows Vista is a major upgrade to the Windows operating system and is both an evolutionary and revolutionary step forward in the progression of the Windows platform. More base services than ever are provided to increase developer ability and productivity, as well as enhance the level of rich interactivity, usability, and integration delivered to the end-user.

The Windows NT kernel has been further enhanced to achieve greater levels of security, reliability, and performance. Several platform services and device driver interfaces have moved to (or returned to) user-level, increasing platform resiliency and simplifying extensibility. Rights management technologies and code access security help maintain user data privacy and application and system-level integrity. Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB), technologies such as Secure Startup utilizes trusted hardware components to further protect end-user data from unauthorized access and ensure system integrity.

Has the slumbering giant finally arisen? And how many of Microsoft’s gazillion promises will he actually fulfill? You’ll have to wait and see …

So is there no truth in the rumor then that the newer 64 bit systems like Vista were going to be hardcoded into the actual chip to avoid software piracy?
Or is Vista gonna be simply distributed on CD’s as per normal?

Never bro! All those type of rumours were doing the rounds before XP’s release too … They’re nothing more than geeky conspiracy theories! Like, the time I read on that website, that, like, do you know that XP isn’t going to support mp3s! Serious! It’s true! I’m never buying MS agaiN!
