Out of the Box

twisted building
I often wonder if graphic designers, architects, engineers and other people who make stuff look good eat a special cereal. Do they drink a different water? When they graduate from college or university, do they get a secret telephone number to a shop that nobody knows about where they can buy special ‘out-of-the-box’ potions?

I mean take this building on the left, for example. There’s no reason why it has to have a twist. That twist effect isn’t designed in order compensate for strong winds or earthquakes. Which means, that the designer, Santiago Calatrava, woke up one morning thinking, “I’m going to make an apartment block, with a twist.”

Where does he and other ground breaking designers get their juice from? Where do they get such inspiration?

As a music producer, I’ve often found the most incredible tunes and sound-effects, by accident. I’ll forget to reset a certain synth or instrument and it’ll play at a weird frequency and hey! presto… a new tune.

Is it much the same with designers, architects and engineers? Was Santiago Spinning on his chair whilst drinking a strawberry milkshake and accidently stroked his wacom tablet resulting in that phenomenal twist in his building?

I have no idea.

Either way, whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it well. Them and designers in all fields continue to inspire us all.

Keep it up.
