See the Beautiful Land
This past weekend, starting Thursday, I had the privilege in taking my cousin (she ’s visiting from Munich) out to a few well-known places around Cape Town. I must say its great being a tourist in your own city. Got to see a few sights I wouldn’t have if my cousin had not visited. First stop was Andiamo in Cape Quarter, which can be found in Waterkant Street, Green Point. The delicious Italian cuisine, balmy summer evening and trendy atmosphere made it a night I’d definitely want to repeat.
Saturday we took the 2-hour drive to Gansbaai in order for my 55-year-old father and 30-year-old cousin to do shark cage diving. Although there are roughly 8 companies offering this service, my father went with a company called Shark Diving Unlimited. Although I was just a bystander, from what I saw, the service they received was top notch and I would definitely recommend them. So if you have R800 in your back pocket and some extra adrenaline you don’t know what to do with, why not take the trip out there?

Waters were murky so visibility wasn’t that great. They did, however, get the opportunity to see a three-meter great white about a meter away. Apparently there’s this place called Shark Alley between two islands off Gansbaai where, in winter, you will be able to dive in the midst of approximately 15–18 of these beautiful, but deadly, creatures.
I, on the other hand, tried my hand out at body boarding (although I’ve dabbled in it in the past) at Pearly Beach and realised that swimming in water that cold, which prevents you from having feeling in your toes, feet, calves, thighs and @ss (I think I’ll stop there) is just NOT my thing. Next time I’m definitely gonna use a wetsuit.
All in all I had a very pleasant time being a “tourist” in my own city and recommend that you all take some time out and do the same.
Outty…
