Shew, bring on the heavies!
I’m not making any real statements here, I guess I’m just wanting to raise my concerns about this issue cos recently I’ve been amazed at the number of natural disasters plaguing the planet!! (2005 had the highest number of natural disasters in recorded history.) On the weekend I opened the paper and on one page there were three articles: one on the depletion of fresh water reserves, one on global warming with estimates of 20 years before irreversible climate damage is done, and then one on the resurgence of avian flu in Turkey…

My interest really piqued after reading a recent newspaper insert article called: “When the lights go out!” It addressed issues like the rapid decline of human innovation (invention) and the depletion of oil and how countries are not looking for alternatives but rather planning war with the aim of harnessing those reserves for themselves. Some leading scientist estimate that the planet has, again, just 20 years of oil provision left; whilst others claim, even though there may be oil in the wells, levels are dropping to a point where the oil is becoming ever more difficult to reach with today’s available equipment. The article ended with the statement that there is no turning back; that alternative energy resources should have already been identified and the technologies for its use should already be in place! Is it already to late?
Last night I watched the news and saw how Prime Minister Tony Blair delivered his shock and horror speach to parliamant about Iran’s new Nuclear programme. And I thought, “What a mess this place is in!” The planet is running out of reserves to facilitate the use of current human technologies and world leaders continue to play their power and $$$ games! As human beings, the global population is so short sighted that future global energy collapse seems to far away for immediate recognition! Tomorrow’s problem!? Er…NO! See, oil depletion is the trigger! The world is built around oil to drive the engine. As oil reserves go down, the price of fuel goes up. As fuel goes up, the price of everything that is delivered through vehicles driven by fuel also goes up i.e. inflation. As inflation goes up, people have to fork out more money to cover the cost of daily living. Ask yourself, how far does this ball roll? Governmants will go to war for oil and water when they realize that there are no more alternatives to satisfy the need! Attention will primarily focus, no longer on the growth of power and money, but on survival, from an individual and national perspective.
I can’t remember when last I heard the phrase that went something like “save the planet for the children!” I guess parents today are to concerned about the safety of their own lives and that of their children to worry to much about the safety of the planet around them! And who could blame them!?!
So “what if ” the world really is on a path of no return? I’m really curious to know what others think!
