Tamiflu, anybody got a spare few bar?

Tamiflu, humans greatest hope in the case of a bird flu breakout. Should a human being contract regular flu and bird flu at the same, tamiflu will be more popular than paris hilton. *Notice how I cleverly used “bird Flu” and “Paris Hilton” in the same sentence in the hope of drawing hits. If she does actually get bird flu I might feel bad. Nah*

Anyhoo, back to the point. If you’re fortunate enough to be living in a first world country with first world infrastructure, you’re probably on the dole. Wait that’s not the point, although I would be. The point is, all the rich countries have bought millions of doses of Tamiflu, while the slightly less rich to soup kitchen broke haven’t. Nett result? Well, in South Africa it’s pretty much an open market on Tamiflu! For the slightly pesimistic / realist investor, purchsing up a storm of Tamiflu would certainly make business sense. Consider:

H5n7, deadly, and likely to mutate. Killing millions. Unless… Unless they have a 5 day course of Tamiflu at approx USD 60 or ZAR 360. If you’re french, one of approx 60 Million countrymen, you’d rest secure knowing that your government has purchased 9 million doses of Tamiflu. If you’re South African, you’re in big trouble. It’s an open market with Tamiflu in SA, that means ANYBODY can get a license and buy mass quantities of it. That means that there is a gap in the market for approx 8 Million doses at an approx retail value of ZAR 3Billion.

Anybody wanna take a punt? I could always sell my small island in the South Pacific. Wait, maybe Lolly Jackson can sell a few of his Ferrari’s to save our small country, and make a quick buck from a different kind of bird. Or perhaps we should leave it in the hands of our fair politicians, but then we’d probably have to picket for them, just like they did for anti retro-virals. Either way, we’re in a lot of trouble.
