The Apprentice - Tokin ‘yo and friends

Tokin’ Yo Sexwale - Our answer to Donald Trump? Hmm. Hope you weren’t holding your breath. This man fumbles through everything, stammers at the simplest of dialogues and would be left speechless if not for his 2 powerhouse side-kicks. I don’t think Tokyo knows how to do it like he’s doing it for TV. In fact I think the dude is struggling to adapt to being televised. But he’s the only one who’s camera aware and struggling with it. Go fig.

Here’s the long drawn our part: read on if you care…

I don’t know how everyone else feels but I think the local apprentice is really amateur. I hoped for better but expected reasonable at least. I got disappointed. Respek to Tokyo for making so much money but what a tjop. I actually expected it to be a let down but I forced myself to watch as I knew one of the contestants. He got fired on day one. Now riddle me this, and this seems to be the general consensus among watchers of the show - was that first firing a display of an absolute lack of ability to make an intelligent decision or was it just plain old (drum roll please) Drrrrrrrr Tsshhhh. Racism. For those who never watched it went down like this:

Tristan impressively takes control from day one, he manages to be appointed leader for the first challenge and does wonders to spur the self-named “pride of lions” on. A job not badly done however - the men lose, as they so often seem to do in the early stages of these games. They get dragged into the boardroom and they’re all asked to comment on the goings-on. In the interviews with the lads everyone stands up for Tristan and Tristan stands up for everyone. Ultimately he has to choose 2 other people to accompany him to the boardroom. He chose Richard Nzuzo Ndlela and Nthato Mahlaba. I have no idea which is which so let’s just call them Got Lucky number 1 and Got Lucky number 2. Earlier in the interviews with the whole team GL#1 went out of his way to make sure that everyone knew that he really respected Tristan and thought he had done an incredible job - I know this because when asked he said “I really respect Tristan and think that he did an incredible job”.

The conversation with the 3 men later went like this.

TS (Tokyo)- Tristan why have you chosen these 2 men?

TD (Tristan) - I didn’t want to choose anyone, this is the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life (yeah right i’m sure he had a harder time that morning trying to choose between coco-pops or high-fibre bran) but I chose GL#1 because he was completely insubordinate and wouldn’t do what I said. I chose GL#2 because he was asleep on the job, I went to look for him when we were all (somewhere I can’t remember) and he was asleep in his bed.

GL#1 - Well actually now that i’ve been incriminated i’ve changed my mind, Tristan was a poor leader and was just cheerleading the team (forget what I said ealier about respecting him I was just saying that so he wouldn’t bring me to the boardroom) He just chose me because i’m good at everything except obeying orders and he was intimidated by me.

GL#2 - Yes - Tristan was a bad leader, and I wasn’t sleeping, I was err, just resting my eyes.

TS - Well guys I have here 3 men who weren’t honest in the initial interview so you’re all equally guilty of falesly supporting each other when you really had problems with each other. I have one guy who is insubordinate and I have one guy who sleeps on the job while everyone else is hard at work. Now let’s see that one black mark Tristan, 2 black marks Richard and 2 black marks Nthato. Hmm, let’s see I can handle insubordination and sleeping on the job… Umm, err, I think I’ll fire the guy who got one black mark. Tristan you’re fired.

At this point I started praying that this man never runs for president.

I still struggle to figure out why anyone would fire the one guy who did actually perform in the team (as seen in all the footage shown) and leave on the team an insubordinate and a someone that sleeps on the job, and then justifies his decision by pinning him with exactly the same thing that they were all guilty of. Truth is Tristan was less guilty as he wasn’t asked ouright to rap on the players individually. GL#1 however was asked how he felt about Tristan and DIRECTLY LIED by saying he did such a good job. If it were my company I know what I would do - I would fire Tokyo, and then the guy that sleeps on the job and then whoever else got on my bad side. . Alas it is unusual. So i’ve heard so many people saying the same thing, it was a racist decision. I don’t really care - i’m sure you don’t either. But you know I would actually prefer if it was because then at least Tokyo would seem like he actually had motive. If not, what a baaaaaaaaaaaad decision. I haven’t watched another episode…

And I can pretty much imagine that there are hundreds of other people who’ve done the same, in not watching another episode.

I haven’t yet had the misfortune of watching the SA Apprentice and I don’t plan to.

Much like South African rugby, I fear it’s just another example of placing people in positions because of their ethnicity rather than their ability to perform the task at hand.

Joy.

Ah well, the show isn’t great, but it is alot better than I expected. But the “racism” card is getting old now. I could just as easily say that Tristan is a racist for choosing two black guys to go with him into the board room. (See how petty we would both sound?) Secondly, the way I saw it, the other two guys pretty much out argued Tristan, and that was basically it. Tokyo was visibly unimpressed by any of the three and in fact so was I (I know he’s your friend, but come on, what did he actually come up with apart from cheerleading?). At the end of the day I would have made the same exact decision even if they were all green martians. Anyway, you can relax dude, alot of black people are set to be fired in future episodes since there can only be one winner after all ;-)

Dearest Senkwe. Take a close look at my article buddy, I never said it was racism. You’re obviously too sensitive. I merely stated that that was the feeling of people that have watched the show. I said I didn’t care if it was racism, in fact I said that I would have prefered it if it WAS racism because that would substantiate an OBVIOUSLY BAD decision, regardless of how you try to justify it. And i’m sure he’ll make many more because he’s trying to be too smart due to his severe camera awareness. However, accusing Tristan of racism because he chose 2 black guys may not seem that clever when you consider that there were only 2 white guys on the team to start with. Think about it Plato. You’re not a gambling man I assume, but there is this thing called Odds…

Another thing my Senkwe - You are clearly suggesting in fact that I am a racist by telling me to relax because black people are about to be fired, as though it would bring me some satisfaction. Tut tut, Senkwe, Senkwe. You don’t even know me, yet you judge me, as i’m sure you do everyone else, and that my friend is racism already, Or if I may… the pot calling the kettle black. Teehee. Hee hee, tee hee hee. Read a little bit closer next time you’re about to get irrationally sensitive about things and you’ll find that you’re probably pointing in the complete wrong direction. (Friendly fire.) In fact maybe YOU should go work for Tokyo, you might make a gr8 team… Wink wink back at ya’ ;)

Ugh, my comment was cut off. Ignore the previous bit. Let me repost it.

I was reacting off of the above quote from ypur post and was merely pointing out that insinuating racism, no matter who does it, is getting old. I know Tristan is not racist of course, he’s a fairly likeable fellow. That doesn’t mean the decision to fore him was wrong as I’m sure Trump would have done the same (yes I used to watch the US version pretty religiously) seeign as he really didn’t do much of anything except cheer the boys on. Bottom line is, this isn’t even an argument as we’re pretty much on the same side, racism sucks, the show kinda sucks, this argument sucks.

However that last barb that I threw in there was meant to be a joke but I guess it was in bad taste, hence it backfired. My apologies :-)

I’m sure Dale didn’t take offence Senkwe. He’s an easy going guy, aren’t you Dale?

Its the sad thing about South Africa, that unfortunately, because of it’s past, it will always have an air of suspicion when it comes to black & white relations of any sort.

Last thing I want, is for this blog to become a racist hot-spot so lets just all keep it clean & at worst, agree to disagree.

Peace.

It’s all good man. Senkwe and I are just havin a little fun. At the end of the day we’re playing for the same team. I don’t like racism and I don’t like Tokyo but I do like people with strong opinions.

String opinions eh?

Personally I’ve always believed that strong opinions are the key, but hey.. who am I to judge.
