Viruses Spreading via MSN
Antivirus companies have been alerting the public of the growing list of PC viruses that are being spread via the MSN Messenger Network. At least 5 new viruses and adaptions of older viruses have been reported as spreading via MSN. This is proof that the writers of virus programmes are slowly realising the potential of the MSN Network as a portal for fast spreading their viruses.
The first occurence of this MSN worm was in January this year with the Bropia Worm Virus. Symantec says that the newest MSN virus, Kelvir, already has 3 variants since it was discovered on Sunday.
How does it work?
You know the MSN pop-up window “Bob says: “Blah Blah”? You always click on it right? We all do. Well the virus Kelvir, steals your IM contacts lists and then sends you a message from a person on your contact list telling you to go visit a website or to open the attachment he’s sending you. You’re none the wiser and you do exactly as your ‘friend’ asks you and voila…you’re infected.
Firewalls and Desktop antivirus programs are yet unable to block such activity, so warnings are all they can offer at the moment. In other words, just be careful and wary…even with MSN now.
Marvellous.
